HAROLD HAWTHORNE CENTRE

Social Club

Harold Hawthorne Social Club

The Social Club at the Harold Hawthorne Senior Citizens Centre was originally set up as a service for the retirees and older people who lived in the area. It has been going for many years and has been a huge success for all the clients who use the services and activities it provides. It now caters to a much wider audience than just those who live in the immediate area.

There are regular activities held and promoted by the Social club providing entertainment and social networking for all who use the facilities.

A committee is elected annually to plan, promote and provide the activities. All of our committee members are volunteers. The current committee members comprise of both residents of the Village here at the centre and non residents, people who just live locally. They are:

  • President – Yvonne Dickinson
  • Secretary – Marilyn Jones
  • Treasurer – Merle Carter
  • Members – Teresa Oliver, Les Griffin, Betty Seaton and Ron Sutton

The Activities

Activities provided by the social club include:

•  weekly social bowls on Thursdays between 1pm and 3pm with up to 3 mats in play and approximately 17 members. This costs $2.00 for members.

•  Weekly afternoon teas on Friday afternoon at 1.00pm at a cost of $1.00

•  Weekly walking club on Saturday mornings. Transport to a location decided by the members where a heart pumping hour long walk takes place followed by a return to base and morning tea – all for just $4.00 for members.

There are, of course other activities throughout the year, Millers fashion parades, Melbourne Cup morning and luncheon, watching the Cup on the big screen in the theatre/lounge, Christmas in July (book early!!!), Christmas lunch in December, both with entertainment included and who could forget our Easter Lunch with an Easter bonnet parade and prizes.

Every six weeks the Social Club produces their own newsletter (follow link from home page) called the “Chatterbox”.

Other activities are planned for the near future; these include a social card evening, Book club, Wine club and Board games evenings. On big screens we are also considering events such as Grandparents versus grandchildren games Olympics! They teach you how to play bowls on a games console and you teach them how to play real bowls!

Membership to the Social Club costs just $10.00 per year.
